What to binge watch this summer

2016 was the year of the streaming original.

A study by FX found there were 455 original series on American TV in 2016, an 8 percent increase over 2015. The increase was entirely attributed to streaming shows, primarily on Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, while the number of originals on broadcast, cable and premium cable declined.

No wonder we spent so much time binging on shows like “House of Cards,” “Orange is the New Black” and “Stranger Things.” And there’s no stopping, as Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, Max Go and others continue to churn out addicting new content.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

‘Maudie’
Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke have performances of a lifetime as they star in this beautiful love story based on the real life of Nova Scotia artist Maud Lewis. Maud (Hawkins) is “different.” She is and always has been, in part due to a progressive battle with arthritis. Pushed to the side, she attempts to make her own way as she becomes a housekeeper for Everett (Hawke), a rough and quiet loner. Love finds its way into their hearts and the world becomes a better place for it. It’s a feel-good film that will have you laughing, gasping and crying as it touches the very core upon which you feel. Opens June 16.

The Best Weight Loss Advice Ever!

“I have been doing Weight Watchers for almost a year now. I was at an unbearable weight and knew I needed help. Weight Watchers was offered at Riverside Medical Center, and I was able to participate during my lunch. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to begin my weight loss. As of my weigh in this week, I am down 55 pounds. I am feeling so much better and feel more positive about losing more. There are always challenges, but there is always the opportunity to start fresh the next day. Weight watchers provided a code for online support that is wonderful. It helps track food and provides points for food for their smart point system. Being accountable for intake is critical and makes me aware of my food consumption. It’s not always easy, but shopping for smaller size clothing is always a great incentive.”

— Mary Kleinert, the departmental secretary of environmental services at Riverside who has lost more than 55 pounds
